GIS5945 - Internship Update

    As part of obtaining the GIS Graduate Certificate at University of West Florida, a requirement is undergoing 130 hours of hands-on GIS related experience – this can be done in a few different forms, but I am attempting to undergo an internship experience. In order to obtain an internship, I considered the industry and type of business that may use GIS and sent correspondence when a business/governmental agency aligned with my goals.

    I’ve started an internship with a private environmental consulting firm. I will be expected to produce quality maps that indicate appropriate site planning, general environmental maps, and test my ability when it comes to creating flow in ArcGIS Pro/Online. I may supplement this internship with ESRI courses as it applies.

    I've also gotten a recent positive response from one of my local government departments. This department has a GIS Manager who has indicated willingness to act as a supervisor on assigned projects, but I anticipate a more solid answer from them in the coming week (Jan. 20th – Jan. 25th).  I may end up with two internships within this semester, but I’ll know more in the coming week!

    Additionally, I’ve decided to join the Seven Hills Regional User Group for GIS (SHRUG). This user group is nearest to my location, which provides me more in-person opportunities to connect with GIS professionals in my area within the Tallahassee, Florida regional area. It is a multidisciplinary user group, so has a wide range of GIS knowledge being applied in different ways! There are no requirements to join and it is open to anyone interested. There will be more user groups I join, but I appreciate how this one is close to home so I can get to know my local GIS people.

GIS 5007 Module 6: Isarithmic Mapping

     Module 6 of Computer Cartography focused on isarithmic mapping and using PRISM (Parameter-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model) derived data to showcase the annual precipitation of Washington state, USA over a ~30 year period (1981-2010). Originally created by the PRISM Group at Oregon State University, the PRISM system has proved to be a leading system in producing quality precipitation maps. A climate-elevation regression function is calculated in PRISM with consideration of climate variables that may influence the data, such as proximity to coast, atmospheric layer, topography of region, and more. As precipitation tends to increase with elevation, elevation is an included variable in PRISM using a digital elevation model (DEM) and each DEM grid cell has its own climate-elevation regression function calculated within. GIS5935 Module 2.1: Surfaces - TINs and DEMs

                In this lab, we explored two types of elevation data models - Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN). The DEM is raster-based and information is stored in grid format, while TIN is vector-based and uses irregularly spaced points that were calculated according to the connections of sets of triangles for contouring. Because of this, the DEM has smoother curves in its contour lines, while TIN has pointed/jagged contour lines. The DEM contour lines in this instance also have a few more lines due to the data parameters.                 The TIN contour lines are likely more accurate, as TIN can differentiate between more complex terrain than DEM contour typically can (depending on resolution).
